Departing the ship by motorcoach you will first head to the centre of the Island and the old capital of Mdina. Mdina, Malta’s medieval capital, can trace its origins back more than 4000 years. It was home then, as now, to Malta’s noble families; some are descendants of the Norman, Sicilian and Spanish overlords who made Mdina their home from the 12th century onwards. Their Impressive palaces line its narrow, shady streets. Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city, and unusual in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. Besides exploring the city itself you will also receive a private tour of the Palazzo Falson. This is the most complete of Mdina’s medieval buildings, built circa 1495. Palazzo Falson now contains an interesting collection of paintings, furniture and old Maltese silver. Here the tour will be given by Mr. de Giorgio, the executive chairman of Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti - the organisation looking after, and restoring all the artifacts housed here. You will then head to Valletta, Malta's Capital city and World Heritage site. It was described by Sir Walter Scott as “that splendid town, quiet like a dream”, and was named after Grand Master La Valette. Here you will visit two prime sites. Firstly the Grand Master's Palace, which was formally the abode of the Grand Masters and now houses parliament and the offices of the President. Designed by Girolamo Cassar, the building was completed in 1574. The building houses many suits of armour, 16th and 17th century paintings and frescoes. From here you head to Casa Rocca Piccola. This 16th century palazzo is the private residence of the Marquis de Piro and his family and is open to the public. It has beautiful rooms with splendid furniture and paintings, plus a collection of costumes.
